The Aître Saint-Maclou is an extraordinary piece of medieval Rouen that is still standing today. Unique in Europe, this ancient cemetery with overground galleries has evolved over the centuries into a place of learning and then of culture. The designs carved into its wood, the danse macabre engraved on its columns, and its surprising, rich history, make it a masterpiece worth discovering and preserving.

In 2016, the Métropole Rouen Normandie began extensive renovations of the site. Experts from 15 different trades participated in the work to restore the motifs, façades, columns, woodwork and building frames. In this series of videos, you can follow the restoration over the four years of the project, through the stories of people who actually carried out the work.

From burial place to living space

In the heart of Rouen, a short walk from the Église Saint-Maclou, the Aître is a unique attraction for visitors.

Classified as a historic monument since 1862, it is one of the few remaining cemeteries with overground galleries in Europe. A historical and architectural treasure, the Aître has stood witness as Rouen has evolved down the centuries.

Today, the Aitre is full of life, housing local businesses and craftspeople. Gastronomy, glass-making, pottery, live shows and more… the renaissance of the Aître Saint-Maclou has given it (back) its role as a font of art.
